Commercial tires are used for large, on-road equipment, mostly consisting of trailer and tractor tires. Monitoring tire life is important in these applications to ensure safety to not only the driver, but the people on the road.
Off-the-road tires, better known as OTR tires, are tires that are used for large equipment including but not limited to: backhoes, graders, and trenchers.
Recapping, also known as retreading, is when a worn tire is processed to add new tread. This process is designed to extend the service life of the tire. The recapping process starts with inspection of the tire, followed by the buffing away of any old tread. The new rubber tread is applied to the bare tire by using specialized machinery. Recapping a tire is much cheaper than purchasing new tires and is a great way to recycle the used tire.
